Architectural rendering of a space habitat, with building in a moon base setting. Space Oasis Delft I's design.

SODI: EPITONIUM

The design

The design, EPITONIUM, aims to create a habitable space on the Moon that promotes residents' mental well-being. Key features include a biosphere and a large screen simulating Earth's seasons and day-night cycle. Inspired by the rufous hornero's nest and the epitoniid sea shell, the habitats use biomimicry in their design. To make optimal use of in-situ building methods and materials, lunar regolith is used in the radiation shields. Playful yet functional elements like a slow-motion waterfall support a self-sustaining ecosystem, reduce supply missions, and create a green, natural environment to combat monotony.
